1 Missing Mandatory Fields

cvc-complex-type.2.4.a: Invalid content was found starting with element '...'. One of '{AIFMNationalCode}' is expected.

Why it happens: The most common error by far. The XSD schema requires certain elements in a specific order. If you skip a mandatory field or place it out of sequence, validation fails. Common culprits: AIFMNationalCode, AIFMEEAFlag, AIFNationalCode, ReportingPeriodType.

How to fix: Check your XML against the XSD element sequence. Mandatory fields cannot be omitted even if the value is "not applicable" — use the prescribed null or default value (e.g., NONE for certain enumerated fields).

2 Incorrect Date Format

Why it happens: The XSD schema requires ISO 8601 date format (YYYY-MM-DD). Many spreadsheet-based workflows export dates in European format (DD/MM/YYYY) or American format (MM/DD/YYYY). DateTime fields require YYYY-MM-DDTHH:MM:SS.

How to fix: Reformat all date fields to YYYY-MM-DD. For CreationDateAndTime, use 2026-03-30T10:00:00. Watch for ReportingPeriodStartDate and ReportingPeriodEndDate — these trip up even experienced filers.

3 Invalid LEI Format

Error
cvc-pattern-valid: Value 'ABC12345' is not facet-valid with respect to pattern '[A-Z0-9]{20}' for type 'LEIType'.

Why it happens: Legal Entity Identifiers (LEIs) must be exactly 20 characters, alphanumeric only (uppercase letters and digits). Common mistakes: including hyphens or spaces, using a partial LEI, or entering the wrong entity's LEI. Additionally, LEIs have a built-in checksum (characters 19-20) that must validate.

4 Wrong AIF Type Code

cvc-enumeration-valid: Value 'HEDGE_FUND' is not facet-valid with respect to enumeration '[NONE, HFND, PEQF, REST, FOFS, OTHR]'.

Why it happens: The AIF type classification uses ESMA's prescribed codes, not human-readable names. The schema expects: HFND (Hedge Fund), PEQF (Private Equity Fund), REST (Real Estate Fund), FOFS (Fund of Funds), OTHR (Other). Using full names or custom codes causes validation failure.

How to fix: Map your internal fund classifications to ESMA's enumerated codes. Reference the Annex IV taxonomy documentation for the complete list of valid values for each enumerated field. There are 20+ enumerated fields with prescribed values.

5 Leverage Calculation Errors

Why it happens: Leverage values in the Annex IV schema must be non-negative decimals expressed as percentages. A leverage ratio of 1.5x should be reported as 150 (i.e., 150%), not 1.5. Negative values are never valid. A fund with no leverage should report 100 (100% = 1:1, no leverage).

How to fix: Convert leverage ratios to percentage format: multiply by 100. A gross leverage of 2.3x = 230. A commitment method leverage of 1.0x = 100. Never report 0 for leverage — unleveraged funds report 100.

6 Liquidity Profile Percentages Don't Sum to 100

Business rule violation: Portfolio liquidity profile percentages must sum to 100.

Why it happens: The liquidity profile section requires percentage breakdowns across time buckets (1 day, 2-7 days, 8-30 days, 31-90 days, 91-180 days, 181-365 days, >365 days). These must sum to exactly 100. Rounding errors (e.g., reporting 33.33 + 33.33 + 33.33 = 99.99) cause this failure.

How to fix: Ensure rounding adjustments are applied so totals equal exactly 100. Apply the rounding difference to the largest bucket. Both portfolio liquidity and investor liquidity profiles must independently sum to 100.

7 Incorrect Reporting Period

Why it happens: The ReportingPeriodType and ReportingPeriodYear fields must exactly match your reporting obligation. Quarterly reporters use Q1Q4, semi-annual use H1/H2, annual use Y1. The error often occurs when the reporting period in the XML doesn't match the period selected in BaFin's portal upload form.

How to fix: Double-check that your XML's ReportingPeriodType matches your filing frequency and the specific period you're filing for. The ReportingPeriodYear must be the calendar year (e.g., 2026), not the financial year if they differ.

8 Missing NCA Country Codes

cvc-complex-type.2.4.b: The content of element 'AIFMCompleteDescription' is not complete. One of '{AIFMHomeMemberState}' is expected.

Why it happens: Several fields require ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes (e.g., DE for Germany, LU for Luxembourg). The AIFMHomeMemberState, AIFDomicile, and NCA-related fields are frequently left empty or filled with full country names.

How to fix: Use ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 codes everywhere: DE, LU, AT, FR, IE. Not "Germany", "Deutschland", or "DEU". The schema accepts only the 2-letter code.

9 SubAssetType Conflicts with Main Asset Type

Error
Business rule violation: SubAssetType 'SEC_CSH_CSH' is not valid for AssetType 'DER_FID_FIXI'.

Why it happens: The Annex IV asset classification uses a two-level hierarchy: main AssetType and SubAssetType. Each SubAssetType is only valid under specific AssetTypes. For example, cash SubAssetTypes (SEC_CSH_*) are only valid under the SEC_CSH AssetType. Mixing hierarchies — putting a cash SubAssetType under a derivatives AssetType — causes rejection.

How to fix: Reference ESMA's Annex IV classification table. Each SubAssetType has a single valid parent AssetType. Build a validation lookup table in your generation process.

Why it happens: The investor breakdown section (by type and geography) is mandatory for AIF-level reports above certain AuM thresholds. Even if you have a single investor or a small fund, the breakdown fields must be populated. Empty InvestorConcentration or InvestorBreakdown blocks cause immediate validation failure.

How to fix: Always populate the investor breakdown, even for single-investor funds. Report the investor type (Professional, Retail, etc.) using ESMA's prescribed codes. For geographic breakdown, report the dominant investor country. Zero-value entries are acceptable; empty/missing elements are not.
